Prior to Tim's coaching career, he had an extensive playing career both collegiately and professionally. Tim attended Midland College (NJAA D1) in Texas after graduating from Birchmount park C. I. At Midland College he holds the single season records in Batting Average (.468) and On-Base Percentage (.553) as well as the career record in Batting Average at .459.
After two years, Tim transferred to Arizona State University (NCAA D1) in Tempe, Arizona where he hit .349 over 59 games before competing in the 2007 NCAA College World Series.
Smith has been selected in the MLB Draft three times in his career. First in 2004 out of high school by the New York Mets in the 21st Round, again in 2005 in the 17th Round by the Milwaukee Brewers and finally in 2007 in the 7th Round by the Texas Rangers where he signed to play professionally. During his professional career, Tim spent time with the Rangers, Royals, Braves and Orioles minor league systems where he finished with a career .303 Batting Average.
